IMPBA INTERNATS 2004 REVIEW
By Brian Schymik
Each summer the International Model Power Boat Association holds its most prestigious R/C boat race to crown the national champions of nitro racing. This year the race was organized by the Jackson R/C Model Boat Club in Jackson, Tennessee. The racing call was heard far and wide and 143 boaters from 21 states and 4 foreign countries responded to challenge for the label of “US-1” champion. This weeklong event drew intense competition in 13 championship classes and 6 additional special events with 468 boats entered. By the end of the week the tired competitors had plenty of sun and fun to savor until next year.
The IMPBA Internats format is unique among racing organizations. Standard heat racing competition is run for 5 rounds in each class. But this only counts for one half of the score. In addition, racers must compete in time trials for Oval and Straightaway points, and the winner must accumulate enough points in all three segments to conquer his challengers. This requires a US-1 champion to have a reliable, fast, well-driven boat that is strong in all three categories, not just lucky on one day.
The Jackson Club provided a superb site for racing, with a fenced in pit area and digital starting system. This club worked tirelessly for a year to prepare and then came through with flying colors. The weather hindered the race only for a short time, and water conditions throughout the week were near perfect. One heat was run in a near monsoon, but shortly later the clouds broke and we were back to smooth water and fast boats.
The event started on Sunday July 24, with four days of heat racing in the 13 US-1 classes. With between 25 and 40 boats per class, consistent top finishes were needed to stay in front. Close heat racing created some flying parts, but CD Richard Johnsey kept the racers inline and on the start. Top 5 finishers in each class proceeded to the next 2 days of time trials for Oval and Straightaway times. We finished with specialty classes which included Twin hydroplanes, stock B tunnel, open gas, and 2 Junior classes for our young boaters. It was very encouraging to see our 5 junior ( under 12 years old ) boaters’ enthusiasm and excitement. They enjoyed a great family activity and each walked away with a big trophy and a bigger smile.
Event Winners were awarded trophies at the Award Banquet at the end of the week and US-1 winners received their personalized National Champion Plaques and emblems. Among the banquet Highlights were Special Awards for Excellence of Performance and the President’s Cup, and the William LeFeber Award for outstanding contribution to the IMPBA. This year’s LeFeber award, IMPBA’s highest honor, was bestowed on Ron Byrd from Florida. He spent 2 solid weeks, and many other hours beforehand, organizing the race, scoring and computerizing the results for the contestants and those watching over the Internet. Congratulations and nice job, Ron.

A special congratulations to Ernie LaFleur. This fine Texan brought an impressive arsenal of boats, entered 12 US-1 classes and won 6 of them! That is an amazing accomplishment which has never been done before. Ernie is a nice guy and great competitor. You have to bring your best to beat him, and as seen, not many did.
The foreign contingent was particularly strong this year, with 10 racers from Australia attending the competition. These guys came from down under for an extended stay, and attended the NAMBA Nats in Los Angeles before coming over to Jackson. They had a great time and provided lots of entertainment on Karaoke night and at an impromptu auction at the banquet.
Congratulations to all winners. Many sponsors assisted in putting on this great race. They include Futaba Radios, Rossi sales of America, RaceCraft Bearings, HTB Boats, Silver Bullet Pipes, Precision Boats, Tidewater Marine, 707 Specialties, Magnum Tunnels, Technology Hobbies, Speedmaster Boats, Keeley’s Custom Motor Works, Powersurge Racing, RC Marine Designs, Bandit Boats, Al’s Hobby Shop, Crapshooter Boats, Zuber’s Prop Nuts and Walt’s Hobbies.
